The first item to check when remodeling an older home is the electrical
service itself. You need to determine whether you have enough amperage coming in to do the things you want to do. Many homes being remodeled were built before there were all electrical appliances, water heaters, etc., therefore it may be necessary to upgrade your service to handle your modern day requirements.

The next issue is that building codes have changed drastically in the
last 30-40 years. Once we get started on your project, we are required
to bring the area up to current code. Another new requirement is to
install GFI outlets in kitchens and bathrooms to prevent electric
shock. We are also required to install more outlets per linear foot of
countertop in the kitchen.

Should you decide to go from a freestanding oven to a separate oven &
cooktop, you would need an additional 220-Volt circuit. Replacing a
vent hood with a built in hood / microwave means another appliance
circuit. Ceiling fans, recessed lighting, under cabinet lighting… you
get the picture.

For these reasons, we need to determine your electrical needs early in
the game. Don’t put off decisions about appliances and lighting,
believing that these are insignificant matters that can be addressed a
little further down the road. Changes are simple in the beginning, and
more costly and dangerous later.
